All-female hockey team featured in television series

Inukjuak’s Uluit are the “Champions of the North”

Can Inuit women take over Canada’s national pastime?

At least one group of women in Inukjuak already has, and the story of their all-female hockey team will be told in a five-part documentary series called “The Uluit: Champions of the North,” due to air this month on APTN.

Filmed over the course of one year, “The Uluit” is the story of Inukjuak women who leave their roles as mothers, teachers, midwives and social workers to hit the ice for a few evenings a week.

The series promises a “rare view into the victory as well as the struggle faced by a culture and community steeped in tradition,” says a news release on the series, which was produced in part by Susan Avingaq and Madeline Ivalu with Arnait Video Productions and Rotating Planet.

The series airs on APTN starting March 7 for most viewers (see broadcast times below) and runs for five weeks.

• March 7: 8:30pm
on APTN (North Feed)

• March 8: 12:30pm
