DFO researchers rescued from the ice near Igloolik

Their two boats got stuck in ice during a three-day research trip

A research team from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans arrived in Igloolik on the evening of July 19, after they were airlifted away from their two boats, which had become stuck in ice-choked waters.

The researchers, who were tracking whales, were cut off in ice about 20 km northeast of Igloolik Island and Neerlonakto Island, said a July 20 RCMP news release.

The team had departed from Igloolik Point on July 14 and were due back in Igloolik on July 17, police said.

The five researchers were flown from an ice floe by a chartered private helicopter from Hall Beach and were taken back to Igloolik.

Police say their vessels are “not a total loss and not damaged as of yet.”

A satellite will keep tabs on the boats, so that they can be retrieved later.

Police report no injuries and said everyone remains in “good health.”
