Pay increase sought for CamBay officials

Council seeks more money for mayor, deputy mayor jobs

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

The mayor and deputy mayors of Cambridge Bay can look forward to part-time salaries more on line with what’s found elsewhere in Nunavut.

That is, if the Government of Nunavut approves its new bylaw which received its second reading at the Feb. 21 council meeting.

According to the proposed bylaw, the mayor— a position now held by Syd Glawson— would see a pay raise of $10,000— but, at the same time, would commit to working at least 20 hours a week on behalf of the hamlet, including office time, meetings and public engagements.

The deputy mayor, a post now held by Wilf Wilcox, would receive $20,000 instead of $15,000, while all members of council would receive $125 per meeting and if they’re acting as a mayor or deputy mayor, $50 more.

The increases, which also affect honoraria for travel, add about $30,000 to the hamlet budget.
