Attagutaaluk hangs on to QIA job by 11-vote margin

Incumbent keeps sec-treasurer post after recount

Joe Attagutaaluk, the incumbent secretary-treasurer of the Qikiqtani Inuit Association, will keep his job following a recount that saw his margin of victory shrink from 50 to 11 votes.

In the Dec. 10 QIA election, held among all eligible Baffin region beneficiaries, the preliminary vote count said Attagutaaluk had won 1,609 votes, 50 more than Paul Irngaut’s 1,159.

In the recount, Attagutaaluk’s total shrunk to 1,586, only 11 more than Irngaut, whose total rose to 1,575.

“The difference in the result of this recount is a combination of some miscounting and the fact that there were more spoiled ballots than what was originally counted,” said Navarana Beveridge, the chief returning officer.

In the recount, each candidate was represented by a witness. Each side was required to agree with the other to resolve any disputes over the admissibility of ballots.

The recount was ordered in mid-December, but shipping problems and bad weather delayed the transport of ballots to Iqaluit.
