Consulting firm clarifies its role in Baffin Bay seismic project

Nexus Coastal understands the important role a responsible media plays within society.  An informed public is the foundation of good government, and responsible decision-making.

This requires journalists to properly and fully conduct research and verify facts prior to printing a news article to confirm that the information contained in their articles is accurate and correct before they are released to the public.

We believe the author did not get the facts correct in your article entitled “Firm hiring for Nunavut seismic testing, but project not yet approved” posted on March 5, 2014, and we would like to clarify a few points made about the roles of the companies mentioned.

The proponents of the proposed offshore seismic survey are TGS-NOPEC Geophysical Company ASA, Petroleum GeoServices (PGS) and Multi Klient Invest AS (MKI), and not Nexus Coastal. MKI is a wholly owned subsidiary of Petroleum Geo-Service ASA.

Nexus Coastal Resource Management is a small consulting company located in Halifax, Nova Scotia. We were formed by a group of marine affairs specialists who are committed to community participation in resource management.

We were hired to facilitate the community and stakeholder engagement for the proposed project as outlined by the National Energy Board’s permitting regulations.

We have also been tasked with continuing engagement with Nunavummiut through the advertisement of jobs which may be available should the proposed project be approved.

In order to meet normal regulatory requirements, employment opportunities are being advertised prior to the final decision by the NEB.

The advanced announcement of job opportunities provides sufficient time for people to be notified about potential employment, recruitment activities to be conducted and for those hired to receive the required training.

We believe that the Nunatsiaq News has demonstrated its valuable role in bringing local and national news to the people of Nunavut.  We regret the fact that the report on the notice of employment opportunities and the municipal governments’ deliberations on the proposed survey have contained factual errors.

We suggest that the journalist refer to the NEB website where the Project Description and EA documents are posted in order to get the correct information on the proposed project and the role NEXUS Coastal has played in the process.

We trust you find this information beneficial to your understanding of the proposed project.
