On World Water Day, March 22, the Council of the Federation announced the territorial and provincial recipients of its “excellence in water stewardship” award.

For Nunavut, the award goes to a research group based in Nova Scotia that’s been studying wastewater treatment systems in Nunavut.

The Centre for Water Resources Studies partnered in 2010 with the Government of Nunavut to develop a wastewater research project in six Nunavut communities.

Its researchers are now in their third year of this five-year project studying cold climate wastewater treatment systems and their impacts on the environment.

To date, the research team has focused their work in four communities, including Grise Fiord,
Coral Harbour and Kugaaruk, which represent a cross section of different treatment technologies and places.
