Fisheries consultation tonight in Iqaluit

GN looking for input on renewed Nunavut Fisheries Strategy

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

People who want a say on how Nunavut manages its fishery are invited to a series of community meetings, the first of which will be held tonight, Feb. 20, in Iqaluit.

The GN’s environment department will ask members of the public for their views on the Nunavut Fisheries Strategy, which was drafted in 2005 in collaboration with Nunavut Tunngavik Inc.

This strategy, says the Feb. 20 GN news release, helped to grow the industry and the department is hoping the renewed strategy, “builds on those successes and identifies new opportunities” for the future of the industry in the territory.

Iqaluit’s meeting tonight is from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Navigator Inn. Refreshments will be served.

The news release instructs Nunavummiut outside of Iqaluit to listen to their local radio station for upcoming meeting locations and times in their community. If you are unable to attend a meeting but still want to contribute, you can call Devin Imrie, from the environment department’s fisheries and sealing division, at 867-473-2642.
