Iqaluit RCMP: searchers recover second body

Girl, 18, found dead near 27-year-old man

In addition to finding the body of a missing 27-year-old man Feb. 4, searchers also found the body of an 18-year-old girl, the Iqaluit RCMP said Feb. 5.

The Iqaluit search and rescue committee released the identity of the deceased man, Pauloosie Qaunirq, early in the morning of Feb. 4.

But it wasn’t until late in the afternoon of Feb. 5 that RCMP released information about the discovery of the dead 18-year-old.

In a news release, police said they are not releasing her name.

The two people appear to have gone out on the land on the afternoon of Feb. 1, just a few hours before a powerful winter storm swept across Iqaluit, creating blizzard conditions for almost two days.

The family of Qaunirq had started searching Feb. 2. On Feb. 3, they called the City of Iqaluit, the search and rescue committee and the RCMP to ask for help.

Police said they found the bodies just two miles north of the airport runway.

The familes of the deceased persons have been notified. Police said they will continue to investigate their deaths in cooperation with the Nunavut chief coroner.

At the same time, police offer the following advice:

• check weather forecasts before going out on the land;

• bring a GPS device, satellite phone or SPOT device before going out on the land;

• let someone know where you are going, when you are leaving, and when you will return;

• bring enough supplies to help you survive for at least a couple of days.
