Man, 26, dies Sept. 23 while in custody of RCMP in Igloolik

“This is a tragic situation'

A 26-year old man died Sept. 23 in a jail cell in Igloolik, an incident that the Ottawa Police Service has been sent in to investigate.

On Sept, 23, slightly after 5 a.m., RCMP members in Igloolik responded to a complaint at a residence.

Once on the scene, police arrested a man and brought him to the RCMP detachment.

The man “appeared to be highly intoxicated,” a Sept. 23 RCMP news release said.

Police put the man into one of the detachment’s jail cells.

However, shortly afterwards, “the police found him unresponsive,” the news release said.

The police officers, a guard and a nurse who was called to examine the man “immediately attempted to resuscitate him,” the release said.

Their efforts were unsuccessful and the man died.

The RCMP did not release the man’s name.

“This is a tragic situation, and I want to express my sincere condolences to the family, friends and community of Igloolik,” said RCMP Supt. Hilton Smee.

The “V” Division Major Crime Unit from Iqaluit is currently in Igloolik. An Inuk RCMP member will provide the community and family “with any support they require,” police said.

An independent investigative team from the Ottawa Police Service was scheduled to arrive in Igloolik Sept. 23.

The RCMP requests an independent external investigation whenever there is “a serious of an injury or death of an individual involving an RCMP employee,” Smee has said.

Th Ottawa Police Service also investigated the fatal March 20 shooting of a man by an RCMP member in Igloolik.
