Meet candidates in Iqaluit’s municipal election at Oct. 1 meeting

Candidates for the positions of mayor and councillors will be at all-candidates public meeting


Mark this on your calendar: the Iqaluit Chamber of Commerce is holding an all-candidates meeting Oct. 1, two weeks before the city’s Oct. 15 municipal election.

At the open meeting, which gets underway at 7 p.m. in the Arctic Winter Games arena lobby, you’ll be able to speak to the candidates running for mayor and council of Iqaluit.

Translation services will be provided by the City of Iqaluit.

Allen Hayward and John Graham and Noah Papatsie are running for the mayor’s job.

Ten candidates are contesting eight positions on Iqaluit city council:

• Joanasie Akumalik;

• Kenny Bell;

• Terry Dobbin;

• Ranbir S. Hundal;

• Jimmy Kilabuk;

• Lewis Falkiner Mackay;

• Mark Morrissey;

• Simon Nattaq;

• Romeyn Stevenson; and,

• Mary Ekho Wilman.

District of Education Authority seats are also up for election Oct. 15 along with a referendum among Iqaluit ratepayers to approve the borrowing of up to $40 million to pay for construction of a new aquatic centre in the vacant lot behind city hall.
