My Little Corner of Canada, Jan. 16

Charliuvunga (Je Suis Charlie)

JOHN AMAGOALIK

When the terrorists attacked the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris recently and murdered 12 of its staff members, it was not just an attack on a small obscure magazine but an assault on one of the basic principles of free and democratic societies around the world.

They attacked freedom of the press and our freedom of expression. As they say, without these freedoms, there is no freedom. Without these freedoms, we would have tyranny and dictatorships.

This was an attack on you and me. Even though this happened in a far off country, freedom of the press and expression are universal rights.

When they are attacked in Paris, Russia, or Timbuktu, they become threatened in Canada.  Indirectly, the attack on Charlie Hebdo in Paris is an attack on CBC North, Tausunni, Qulliq, and Igalaaq.

This is an attack on Zebedee Nungak and his weekly radio column.  This is an attack on My Little Corner of Canada and the newspaper you are reading.

Because I have the freedom of expression, I can criticize the prime minister of our country, our member of parliament, or our premier, without the fear of reprisal. I can make fun of our MLAs, if they deserve it.

I can use my weekly column to defend the rights of my people. I can seek justice where it is lacking.

The terrorists should understand that they cannot defeat the human right of self- expression.  The pen will not be silenced. Charlie Brown, Charlie Chaplin and Charlie Hebdo will prevail.
