Northern students invited to make own anti-tobacco ads

“Tobacco is the main cause of preventable illness and death across the North”

Anti-tobacco ads informing people about the dangers of tobacco use are nothing new.

But this year students from across Nunavut, Northwest Territories and Yukon are invited to create their own ads through a video campaign called “Get Reel,” part of the larger “Smoke Screening” initiative.

This is the eighth year Smoke Screening has exposed students to international and local northern anti-tobacco messages through film and social media.

The new Get Reel component introduced this year is designed to give students from Grades 6 to Grade 12 a chance to share personal anti-tobacco advertising messages, while gaining experience in filming and editing their projects.

The students will view their submissions with those from other students across the three territories, as well as the international ads that make up the program.

“Tobacco is the main cause of preventable illness and death across the North,” said Nunavut Premier Eva Aariak, speaking on behalf of all three northern premiers.

“Rates of smoking in each of the territories are at least double the national average, and Nunavut has the highest rate with more than 60 per cent of those 12 and older smoke. “

Northern educators will also discuss with students the harmful effects of tobacco, review anti-tobacco ads from around the world and vote on their favourite ads.

The ad students choose as the best will be aired on northern television.
