Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. names new CEO: James T. Arreak

"He has a strong finance background"

Starting Oct. 1, Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. will have a new chief executive officer: James T. Arreak.

NTI president Cathy Towtongie announced Sept. 4 that Arreak has been hired as the birthright organization’s CEO where he will take over the position formerly held by Terry Audla, who was elected to head Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami last June.

Arreak has worked as a consultant in Nunavut for the past 10 years. He has also served as an ex-officio member of the NTI board of directors in his role as a member of the Nunavut Trust, and he has worked with the Government of Nunavut’s finance department.

“I look forward to working with Mr. Arreak. He has a strong finance background and will ensure NTI remains accountable and transparent to Inuit as the organization strives for full implementation of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement,” Towntongie said.

The Qikiqtani Inuit Association also praised Arreak’s appointment.

“QIA has worked with Mr. Arreak in the past on several different projects and it was always a pleasure to do so. I congratulate him on his appointment and look forward to working with him again over the coming years,” said QIA president Okalik Eegeesiak in a Sept. 5 statement.
