Dora Maria Carbonu, a nursing instructor at Nunavut Arctic College, displays two tuberculosis-related videos to about 25 students and members of the public Oct. 21 at the college’s Nunatta campus in Iqaluit. Carbonu talked about her trip to the 24th Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Research Congress in Prague last July, sponsored by NAC. Her presentation, “TB in Nunavut: One Community’s Initiative to Promote Awareness Through an Organized Community Health Fair,” received a big response at the conference, she said. Carbonu said in an extract that the project rekindled community motivation and morale, promoted TB awareness, and promoted health and wellness programs through a “holistic approach” to primary health care. “The outcome of this community-driven health-care promotional initiative has culminated in an anticipated annual fair, supported by all sectors, with the goal to overcome stigma about TB,” she said. Nunavut’s TB rate remains 60 times higher than Canada’s. (PHOTO BY DAVID MURPHY)
