Photo: Facebook looks to Arctic for a new data centre

Facebook announced Oct. 27 that it will build a huge data centre in the Swedish city of Luleå, located 100 km south of the Arctic Circle. “After a rigorous review process of sites across Europe, we concluded that Lulea offered the best package of resources, including a suitable climate for environmental cooling [and] clean power resources,” said the social media giant. The centre, whose servers will transmit some of the information shared by Facebook's 800 million users, should be in operation by 2014. Its three 28,000-square-metre server buildings will need more electricity than Nunavut does in a year to keep the servers operating. That power will come from hydro-electric projects on the Luleå river. (HANDOUT PHOTO)
