Photo: Happy Canada Day weekend

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

Malikaat, or mountain avens, are in bloom across Nunavut in spring, including in Sanikiluaq, above. Malikaat, with their snow white petals and buttery yellow centres, are known to face the sun so in northern communities, as the sun moves along the horizon, the flower heads follow, leaving their stems twisted up. We'd like to remind readers that the Nunatsiaq News offices in Iqaluit and Ottawa will be closed July 1 and will re-open again for regular business Mon., July 4. We wish all of our readers, contributers and advertisers an enjoyable Canada Day long weekend. (PHOTO BY SARAH MEEKO)
