Amber Kadjuk, 15, of Arviat, gives Victoria Coman, 15, a makeover at Inuksuk High School April 29 as part of the ninth annual Nunavut Skills competition. Forty-five students from Iqaluit, Taloyoak, Arviat, Coral Harbour and Rankin Inlet participated. The competition pits the best in Nunavut against each other in trade skills such as hairstyling, jewellery, photography, carpentry and cooking. “Skills clubs and competitions are great for them to try out their future careers,” said Skills Canada's Nunavut program coordinator, Christine Bérubé. “If they like it, then they get skills to back up and push what they’re trying to accomplish in their careers.” The winners of the competitions will go on to represent Team Nunavut at the national Skills Canada competition in Toronto this June.
