By SPECIAL TO NUNATSIAQ NEWS

This snowy owl spent the summer around Cambridge Bay. But many snowy owls have ended up far from home this winter, with about two dozen camping out in the Boundary Bay regional park in Delta B.C and others spotted in Washington, Oregon and even Kansas where they caused a traffic jam in Kansas City. Solitary predators, snowy owls are the ultimate nomads, roaming across northern Canada in search of their favourite food — lemmings. When they're in the South, they look for open spaces, but often collide with vehicles and buildings and suffer injuries. In their search for food, snowy owls been known to travel from Hawaii to southern regions of Quebec, where they're the province's official bird. Some say this year the snowy owls are migrating even further south due to a lack of food in the North. (PHOTO BY DENISE LEBLEU)
