Police respond to murder-suicide in Kuujjuaraapik

Two men are dead in an incident that took place late March 7

KUUJJUAQ — Two men have died in Kuujjaraapik in a late-night incident involving firearms that took place in the community March 7.

A man with a firearm shot at a second man, killing him, Sgt. Eric Létourneau of the Surêté du Québec provincial police force in Rouyn-Noranda confirmed on the morning of March 8.

The man then turned the firearm on himself, dying by suicide, Létourneau said.

Police, who were called in at about 11 p.m. Wednesday night, are treating the incident as a murder-suicide.

But Létourneau was unable to say more because a major crimes squad, which headed to Kuujjuaraapik early on March 8, has not yet completed its investigation.

Létourneau could not say whether the two men were Inuit, or Cree from the twin community of Whapmagoostui, and had no names to provide.

Sources in Kuujjuaraapik say the two men were Inuit, and that members of the close-knit community are in shock.
