QIA releases official list of candidates for Dec. 10 election

Larry Audlaluk of Grise Fiord, Paul Amagoalik of Resolute Bay elected by acclamation

Eligible voters in Grise Fiord and Resolute Bay won’t vote Dec. 10 to fill their community board positions on the Qikiqtani Inuti Association.

That’s because the QIA’s chief electoral officier Navarana Beveridge said Nov. 14 that she declared Larry Audlaluk of Grise Fiord and Paul Amagoalik of Resolute Bay “duly elected by acclamation following Article 29 (1) of the QIA Election Regulations.”

But in the case of Audlaluk, who is also running in the Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. election to choose a new president for that organization, that acclamation is subject to the outcome of NTI’s election, which also takes place Dec,. 10, she said.

“If the results are in his favor and he gets elected to NTI, he will have to withdraw himself from QIA and a byelection for the community director in Grise Fiord will be set. If he is not elected to NTI, he remains acclaimed in QIA’s election,” she said.

The official list of candidates for the 2012 QIA elections, which the QIA notes is still subject to final eligibility confirmation checks, includes:

Secretary Treasurer

• Joe Attagutaluk

• Paul Irngaut

Arctic Bay

• Levi Barnabas

• Emma Oyukuluk

• Andrew Taqtu

Cape Dorset

• Olyauk Akesuk

• Eegeesiak Peter

• Stevie Aulaqiaq

• Toomasie Newkingnak

Inuit must be Canadian citizens, 16 years of age or older, enrolled under the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement and live in the Baffin region, to be eligible to vote in the Dec. 10 election.
