A young Nunavik man has been medevaced to Montreal with serious injuries following a shooting in Kuujjuaq early Aug. 19.

Kativik Regional Police Force officers responded to a call at 9:30 a.m. about an “armed and violent” man walking through the Nunavik community, the Sûreté du Québec provincial police said Aug. 19.

The Kativik Regional Government said in an email that the man was firing a gun at the time police were called.

The SQ say the man was injured during the police response and was brought to Kuujjuaq’s Tulattavik health centre. From there, he was medevaced to a Montreal hospital for more care.

SQ spokeswoman Marie-Josée Ouellet said police cannot confirm if the man was shot, although the SQ has been called in to investigate.

Investigators were expected to arrive in the community later Aug.19, she said.

Following the death or injury of any person during a police intervention or detention, Quebec’s public security department requires an outside police agency to investigate the incident.

It’s the second investigation the SQ have been called to do in the region this summer; investigators flew to Inukjuak last month to look into the July 17 death of 29-year-old Jobie Napartuk, who died of apparent gunshot wounds after KRPF officers responded to a call at his home.
