Sanikiluaq teacher faces 11 more child sex charges

Johnny Meeko, 58, now faces a total of 40 charges

A Sept. 5 bail hearing at the Nunavut Court of Justice for alleged sex offender Johnny Meeko, a veteran elementary school teacher in Sanikiluaq, was postponed until Sept. 6 due to 11 new charges filed by the RCMP.

Meeko, 58, now faces a total of 40 charges. The 11 new charges include one sexual assault, six counts of sexual interference with a person under the age of 16, and another four relating to a person under the age of 14.

There are now more than 12 complainants, up from eight when Meeko was originally charged by the Sanikliluaq RCMP Aug. 14.

This is the second time the bail hearing has been postponed. The first scheduled appearance on Aug. 24 was put off until Sept. 5.

On Sept. 5 Meeko, wearing a blue sweatsuit, was escorted to court in a police vehicle in handcuffs. In court, Meeko showed no expression on his face and didn’t speak.

Defense lawyer Deanna Harris said she did not know of the new charges until the show cause hearing was originally supposed to go ahead.

However, Harris said she would have a sufficient amount of time to proceed Sept. 6.

The Sanikiluaq RCMP began investigating Meeko in July of 2012. All the offenses are alleged to have taken place at Nuiyak Elementary School in Sanikiluaq between 1984 to 2007.

The Sanikiluaq RCMP urged victims to come forward when Meeko’s arrest was made earlier this summer.

“The investigation of sexual offences takes considerable time and care,” the Aug. 15 RCMP news release said. “As part of our ongoing commitment to public safety, the RCMP takes steps to support victims who report sexual abuse.  If you have been a victim of this crime, please contact your nearest RCMP detachment.”
