Top Nunavut civil servant abruptly departs job

CGS boss Kathleen Lausman leaves the GN

The deputy minister of the Department of Community and Government Services departed the Nunavut civil service June 29, a terse GN statement said.

Lausman, who started the job in September 2009, previously worked as executive director of the property development branch within the Alberta government’s infrastructure department.

Premier Eva Aariak has not named a replacement for Lausman.

The GN statement, issued June 29, said Roy Green, an assistant deputy minister in the CGS department, will fill in as deputy minister “on an interim basis.”

The statement announcing Lausman’s departure also does not contain the standard expressions of gratitude and good wishes usually extended to senior GN managers who leave their jobs.

Since the 2008 election, the territorial government has endured numerous resignations, departures, job shuffles and new appointments at the top levels of the civil service in departments such as Justice, Finance, Health and Social Services and Human Resources.

Just last May,  lawyer Norman Tarnow was appointed deputy minister of justice, replacing Janice Slaughter, who resigned in December 2011 for personal reasons.
