MLAs shouldn’t forget they work for the people

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

I’m not sure if it’s just me, but it seems as if our elected officials have been misbehaving when encountering with alcohol.

Recently, the MLA for Baker Lake was charged with impaired driving. Also, the MLA for Pangnirtung was intoxicated at a boarding home in Ottawa.

It is sad to see stories like this about leaders who have been elected by their fellow residents from whichever community they’re from.

When you are down in Ottawa for medical travel, you miss home and time doesn’t go as fast as if you were down there for a vacation. The last thing Inuit at the Larga Baffin need is to see an elected official from Nunavut intoxicated.

I know nobody is perfect, but this kind of behavior is unacceptable, especially when you work for the people who believe and trust that you will raise concerns for their community.

The first step is to always apologize to those you have affected. Admitting what you did was wrong can be a hard thing.

Remember though: You work for the people
