City approves dam work

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

Iqaluit city council will raise the Lake Geraldine dam by two metres this summer to deal with the capital’s booming population over the next 20 years.

But to do this, council had to delay plans to build a new treated water storage tank.

That’s because quotes for the earth and concrete work needed to raise the dam came in $388,000 over budget.

To deal with this, council reallocated $555,000 set aside to build a second treated water tank to be used for the dam work.

That transfer gives the city a $100,000 contingency fund for the dam project. The Government of Nunavut approved the reallocation earlier this month.

Council awarded a contract to Kudlik Construction for $2,437,498.
