Depression can be beaten

I am writing this letter to everyone for their information and maybe I’ll help some people who know what I’m talking about.

I want to talk about depression in Nunavik. I really do think that it is a big problem, and I do think that depression affects some people so badly that they do not know what to do and suicide becomes their answer. It does not have to be this way at all.

Many young people may be depressed and they don’t know that there is treatment and medication. Some forms of depression are caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain where the neurons aren’t connecting. Anti-depressants taken monthly usually fixes this imbalance.

If you feel down all the time, tired all the time, and you don’t feel like yourself and you always wonder why can’t I feel the way I used to… well, if you feel this way, you may be depressed.

Do not be scared, it can be treated. Just as your body gets sick sometimes, your brain can have an imbalance, which affects your feelings and your overall mood.

Please, if you feel like this, don’t be scared any more. I know exactly how you feel. I never even liked talking about it, but you need to get help and talk to your doctor. Exercise and eating well always makes you feel good.

Please do not write my name since I live in Kuujjuaq and I don’t want anybody to look at me differently or know what I’ve been going through. It is personal. I just want to help some people who may be in pain but do not know why.
