February bear hunt

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

Iqaluit’s Amarok Hunters and Trappers Association says this year’s polar bear hunt will begin on Feb. 1, instead of Jan. 1.

President David Ell said the date was changed because that’s what the association’s members wanted.

“I gave them an option,” he said. “Some people were saying they wanted Jan. 1, Feb. 1 and March 1, so they voted on Feb. 1.” Members voted on the polar bear hunt at the HTA’s meeting two weeks ago.

Ell said members justified the change by saying the days are longer in February and the ice will be better for the hunt.
