Gas expensive in Iqaluit

City councillor Glenn Williams is fuming about high gas prices in Iqaluit.

He said Iqaluit residents are paying more for gas than residents of any other Nunavut town. Gas is the capital city costs 92.9 cents per litre.

“It’s certainly very expensive for us to have to pay 10¢ to 12¢ per litre higher,” Williams said at a council meeting on Feb. 26.

Ross Mrazek, deputy minister of public works for the Nunavut government, was on hand to set the record straight. He told the council that the GN buys fuel and sells it to Uqsuq Corp., which then sells it to the local gas stations.

The GN, he said, can’t prevent private gas stations from marking up their gas prices.
