Housing Corp. freezes social rents

NUNATSIAQ NEWS

Kelvin Ng, the minister responsible for the Nunavut Housing Corporation, has frozen public housing rents at current levels to prepare for a new rent scale that the government wants to introduce Jan. 1, 2003.

A GN news release says that while some rents may be reduced over the next six months, no rents will be increased.

The new public housing rent scale will likely make an attempt to address the problem of rents that skyrocket to unaffordable levels when tenants find jobs, a problem that’s seen as a disincentive for people to find jobs.
