Last sitting of first assembly

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

MLAs gathered in Iqaluit this week for the start of the last sitting of the first legislative assembly of Nunavut.

During the session, which is scheduled to last about three weeks, members must wade through some substantial legislation, including Bill 12, the Human Rights Act, Bill 33, the Tobacco Control Act, and Bill 35, the Wildlife Act.

However, three weeks is simply a guideline. The session will continue until all matters before the assembly have been dealt with.

If any items remain when the assembly is dissolved in January, they will in effect disappear from the government slate and be replaced by new items, to be determined by the members elected in the Feb. 16 general election.
