The race is on to fill two of Makivik Corp.’s executive positions.

Nunavik’s Inuit birthright organization is hosting elections Jan. 17 for its positions of vice president of economic development as well as corporate secretary.

Andy Moorhouse, the incumbent VP of economic development—who is also a former corporate secretary at Makivik—is seeking re-election to a new term this year.

But he faces competition from two candidates: Kuujjuaq artist Sammy Kudluk and Maggie Emudluk, the Kangiqsualujjuaq-based former chair of the Kativik Regional Government.

Incumbent Corporate Secretary Adamie Padlayat is also running for re-election.

Three other candidates will challenge him in this election: Rita Novalinga (Puvirnituq), George Peters (Kuujjuaq) and George Pilurtuut (Kangiqsujuaq).

Nunavik Inuit who are registered under the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement are eligible to vote in January’s election.

Advance polls open Jan. 11 in each community’s municipal office as well as Makivik’s Montreal office from 9 a.m. through 5 p.m.

On election day, Jan. 17, polls will be open in those same locations from 10 a.m. through 6 p.m.

Makivik staggers its elections each January, so not all of its five executive positions are renewed each year.

It’s been too long that any woman has been at Makivik executive. Women have so much more sense and perspective than the big boys’ club. Imagine what they oversee. I don’t really get what their roles are anymore though.
    Millions spent for no outcome.

Seriously, Boys Club? If you get some credible females to run then maybe it would be a different story, I for one don’t vote for gender it has no bearing, I vote for the campaign and the candidate’s platform, if the candidate gets in and does not follow through with his or her campaign promises or at the very least never tried his or hardest to tackle whatever issue is on the table then guess what? You’re right. No vote next time or get the constituents to get him or her out of office. No brainer. Why don’t you run? Nominate someone you think would do a great job and help with her campaign. Give me, give me, never gets.
