IQALUIT — The Canadian Firearms Centre has finished issuing temporary firearms permits.
According to Chantale Breton, a spokesperson for the centre, Nunavummiut who applied for a gun licence by Jan. 1 — and were determined to be eligible — should have received their temporary licences by now.
The temporary licences are good through June 30, by which time the centre hopes to have replaced them with permanent licences, complete with the gun-owner’s photo.
Breton said compliance with the licencing requirements of the firearms act is currently at around 87 per cent nationwide.
Though statistics specific to Nunavut are not yet available, Breton said she thinks compliance in the territory is at least as high as the national average.
