IQALUIT — The streets and roads of Nunavut’s capital should honour different sections of the territory, an Iqaluit MLA says.

Ed Picco, the MLA for Iqaluit East, rose in the legislative assembly last week to suggest the Iqaluit Town Council name streets after other Nunavut regions and communities.

The idea was recently proposed by Iqaluit resident Saali Peter in a letter to Nunatsiaq News.

In his letter, Peter recommends that each community and region, as well as local heroes, be given a place of honour on Iqaluit’s street signs.

It’s an idea that Picco now backs.

“I too would endorse the idea of naming streets in town after different areas of Nunavut. During the capital campaign we campaigned for, as our motto said, ‘Iqaluit for all of Nunavut.’ ”

“What better way of showing and endorsing that by having Arviat Ave. and Broughton Blvd. and Kugluktuk Dr?” Picco said.

The municipality of Iqaluit is now contemplating the idea of creating names for the town’s streets and roads.

Iqaluit fire chief Neville Wheaton presented a list of possible names to council last month and is pushing the idea as a way to speed up emergency service response time.

“I would also ask that our council endorse and continue the process of naming and renaming of our streets after consultation with our elders and our residents,” Picco said.
