Name: Turbot or Greenland Halibut.

Size: Up to one metre long and 25 kilograms in weight.

Age: Males live 12 years, females live up to 20 years.

Depth found: 200 to 600 metres in waters between 1C and 3C.

Brief turbot fishery history in Nunavut: An exploratory test fishery was conducted in 1990. A commercial fishery in 0B (Davis Strait) opened in 1995. 0B’s 5,550-tonne allocation is divided into three quotas. Nunavut gets a 1,500-tonne quota. Commercial fishing interests get a 2,500-tonne quota and competitive fisheries get a 1,500-tonne quota. Zone 0A opened as a test fishery in 2001.

Selling price: One metric tonne sells for $3,700.
