Throat singer to tour globe

IQALUIT — Cambridge Bay throat singer Tanya Tagaq is joining quirky Icelandic diva Bjork on her worldwide tour this fall.

Bjork, known for her innovative live performances and diverse musical ensembles, discovered Tagaq after the throat-singer recorded the soundtrack for an Icelandic documentary. Bjork then flew Tagaq to New York to sing along with her in the studio.

Within hours, Bjork’s agent asked Tagaq to join the tour, which begins in Paris Aug. 18 and ends in Iceland in December.

Tagaq taught herself to throat-sing while going to the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, so her style is somewhat non-traditional.

“I have no idea what people should expect from my performance,” Tagaq said in a recent interview in the Toronto Star. “I just know that I really like Bjork as a person, as a musician. If she wants me to go up on stage and make one noise, I’ll be happy.”
