Tides will spark power in Arctic town

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

The Arctic town of Hammerfest, Norway, will soon became the first sub-sea power station run on tidal currents, the Reuters news agency reported last week.

Hammerfest, a town of about 11,000 people located in the Norwegian Arctic at about the same latitude as Clyde River, will start to receive some of its electricity from a windmill-like turbine standing on the sea bed.

The small station will have a capacity of about 300 kilowatts — enough power for about 1,000 homes.

The project cost about US$6.7 million to develop.
