Whales chased off

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

Inuvialuit want to explore the possibilities of creating a permanent sanctuary for whales in the Beaufort Sea. They want this area to be protected because they’re concerned that marine radar surveys from Alaska are chasing beluga, narwhals and bowhead whales away from the shores and summer feeding areas.

Last summer, an interim protected area was established on the Canadian side of the Beaufort Sea to protect beluga and bowhead whales in roughly the same area the Inuvialuit would like to see a permanently protected area.
