Arviat elder dies in ATV accident

Murray Ugyuk, 70, pinned inside shed Nov. 20

An Arviat man is dead after he was pinned under his all-terrain vehicle.

On the evening of Nov. 20, the Arviat RCMP responded to a call about an “unresponsive man who had been pinned by his ATV inside a shed in the community.”

They brought the man to the local health centre, where efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

“He had succumbed to his injuries,” a Nov. 22 news release stated.

The Nunavut coroners office and the RCMP have completed an investigation. Source in the community say that Ugyuk was backing into the shed when the accident occurred.

Police have identified the deceased man as Murray Ugyuk, 70, of Arviat.

“Mr. Ugyuk will be greatly missed by the community of Arviat and our thoughts and condolences go out to his family and friends,” the RCMP said.
