Ex-Makivik boss scores directorship on Nunavik Nickel board
“A tireless symbol of Inuit progress in northern Quebec”
Pita Aatami, the ex-president of Makivik Corp., landed an appointment May 16 to the board of Nunavik Nickel Mines Ltd., owner of the the former Canadian Royalties nickel property near Deception Bay.
“Mr. Aatami has been a tireless symbol of Inuit progress in northern Quebec, having shaped policies that have both uplifted and strengthened social, economic, and political progress for the Inuit community that will serve for generations,” a company press release said.
Company shareholders elected Aatami to their board at a general meeting in Montreal.
Aatami lost the presidency of Makivik to Jobie Tukkiapik this past Jan. 19 by a margin of only 23 votes, a result confirmed only after a re-count.
After a series of takeovers and legal disputes, Nunavik Nickel Mines is now owned by Jilin Jien Nickel Industry Co.
Michael H. Wilson, who served as finance minister in Brian Mulroney’s Progressive Conservative government, was also elected to Nunavik Nickel’s board May 16.
