The Baker Lake and Chesterfield Inlet airports will receive upgrades to improve safety, said Nunavut MP Leona Aglukkaq June 17.

Through the Airports Capital Assistance Program, the Baker Lake airport will get $2,068,488 to upgrade its airfield lighting and electrical system, while $1,454,840 goes to the airport in Chesterfield Inlet, also to rehabilitate its airfield lighting and electrical systems.

“Infrastructure investments at regional airports are a key part of our government’s plan to create jobs and generate economic growth,” Aglukkaq said in a news release. “I am pleased that this funding will directly and indirectly create jobs for the airports and local suppliers.”

The money is part of the $25.9 million Ottawa is spending on 35 projects for safety-related improvements at 26 airports across Canada.

Improvements include purchasing and replacing heavy airside mobile equipment, installing wildlife fencing and rehabilitating runway pavements, airfield lighting and electrical systems.
