Iqaluit forum to explore recruitment, retention of workers

Carrefour Nunavut wants to help organizations in the territory recruit and retain staff.

The Iqaluit-based French-language economic development agency will host a forum later this week in Iqaluit, open to business, government representatives and non-profit organizations, on how to maintain growth in Nunavut.

Carrefour Nunavut says that, since the creation of the territory, more inhabitants leave Nunavut than arrive — and that has a direct impact on the competitiveness and effectiveness of businesses.

“In spite of consistent growth, employers often have trouble managing their projects due to a lack of qualified, stable workers,” said Carrefour Nunavut’s Amélie Morel.

“The goal of the event is to assist employers in both the public and private sectors to identify steps and solutions to recruit, integrate and retain qualified staff in the territory.”

The forum will be held March 20 at the Navigator Inn.

Panelists include Patrick Roy, a Baker Lake-based training coordinator with Agnico Eagle as well as John MacDonald, director of career development at the Government of Nunavut`s family services department.

The event runs from 8:15 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
