Last chance this year to apply for Nunavut mobility impairment money
Fund helps pay for equipment, transportation, house modifications
This is the last year in which Nunavummiut with spinal cord injuries and mobility impairments may apply for part of a $20,000 fund.
The Government of Nunavut allocated $20,000 per year over five years to help Nunavummiut with mobility impairments pay for transportation, equipment, education and attendant care.
The funding is administered each year by the Nunavut Solution Team.
The multi-agency team is made up of the Government of Nunavut, the Nunavut Housing Corporation, the Rick Hansen Institute and Nunavummi Disabilities Makinnasauqtiit Society.
NDMS director Annie Quirke says money from the fund has been “well-used.”
Over the past three years, Quirke has helped about a dozen Nunavummiut fill out application forms to gain access to the money.
The money has gone to help those people pay for at-home support, rehabilitation equipment and housing modifications, she said.
Statistics from 2006 show that just under 1,000 Nunavummiut live with mobility impairments.
Those who wish to apply may contact Quirke at 1-877-354-0916 or Teresa Lane at the Rick Hansen Institute at (604) 707-2103.
The submission deadline is Oct. 31, 2011.
