New Workers’ Safety Commission handbook aims to help Nunavut workers

If you live in Nunavut and are injured on the job, a new handbook from the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission can tell you what to do.

The WSCC, which serves Nunavut and the Northwest Territories, developed the handbook, released March 21, as an easy-to-understand resource for workers, in English, French and Inuktitut.

The handbook outlines workers’ compensation coverage, incident reporting and injury claims.

It also outlines the WSCC claims process, including employer and worker responsibilities and how the WSCC assists injured workers.

“The WSCC can only assist injured workers if they file a claim. From there, we classify the claim, determine benefits and work with medical teams and employers to help the injured employees to return to work as quickly and safely as possible,” said Shara Haggett-Shupe, WSCC’s director of claim services.

The handbook also discusses pensions, medical treatment and other benefits, and answers many frequently asked questions.
