Photo: Apex students roll out some meatballs for Iqaluit soup kitchen

Students in the cooking club at Nanook School in Apex were busy Jan. 23 rolling up a mess of pork-and-beef meatballs for the Iqaluit soup kitchen. School organizers started up the popular cooking club in October 2014 with money from the Government of Nunavut’s wellness funding and have been running the program ever since, on Friday afternoons after school’s out. Students learn about nutrition, shopping and cooking up simple, healthy foods. Mom and organizer Kerry McCluskey said she set up the soup kitchen field trip to teach children the importance of kindness and community service. Upcoming club events include a trip to the grocery store, hosting guest cooks and holding a community supper in June. (PHOTO COURTESY OF QAYUQTUVIK SOCIETY)
