A Canadian Forces’ investigation reveals that SAR technician Sgt. Janick Gilbert struggled with faulty equipment and extreme weather conditions Oct. 27, the night he died during a rescue mission outside of Igloolik. Gilbert led a SAR team deployed from the rescue coordination centre in Trenton, Ont. Oct. 27, a day after an Igloolik hunter and his son became stranded in pack ice in their small boat and activated a rescue beacon. The Igloolik hunters were successfully rescued. (FILE PHOTO)
