Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, the official patron of Arctic Winter Games 2016, steps out of an airplane in Nuuk, Greenland on March 6. And he’s not the only one to arrive in Nuuk.Teams participating in this year’s games will disembark at the Nuuk airport throughout the day in anticipation of the AWG opening ceremonies, set to unfold March 6 starting at 8 p.m. The opening ceremonies had to be delayed because of a winter storm that blew through south Baffin and Nunavik on March 4 and Nuuk on March 5. “We definitely don’t have it easy,” said Maliina Abelsen, AWG 2016 general manager, in a news update on the AWG’s website. Sporting events that were scheduled to take place Sunday have been postponed but the program in Nuuk will begin in earnest March 7. Hockey games, which will be played in Iqaluit, begin Monday morning with Nunavut’s bantam males taking on Alberta North at the Arnaitok arena at 9 a.m. and Nunavut’s junior females taking on the Yukon at 9 a.m. at the AWG arena.
