Photo: Doll collection goes to Kitikmeot Heritage Society

Pam Gross, program manager of the Kitikmeot Heritage Society in Cambridge Bay, holds a half-human-half-animal doll made from qiviuq, the soft underfur of muskoxen, in the heritage society’s collection room. The doll, made in the 1970s, is one of many dolls given to the heritage society by the estate of Eva Strickland, who lived in Taloyoak and collected Inuit-made dolls. The heritage society, which maintains Nunavut’s only recognized archives, has received other gifts and donations, including the Arctic book collection of Nunatsiaq News reporter Jane George, who shipped the collection to Cambridge Bay in 2012 with the help of First Air. A conservator is set to arrive in Cambridge Bay Oct. 21 to help the heritage society preserve its collections. Members of the public can also come to the May Hakongak library and cultural centre to learn how to preserve their wallhangings. (SUBMITTED PHOTO)
