Quebec should call an election so people can decide with their votes what they think about Plan Nord, says Parti Québécois leader Pauline Marois, shown here during her 2010 visit to Kuujjuaq. “Right now, the Charest government is rushing things by giving away the North to major mining companies even before we know how we can protect it. Our resources must first provide work for people here and their development must be done in respect of the environment. This is why a Parti Québécois government will involve local people in a sustainable planning for the territory,” Marois said March 1. “The problem with northern development as proposed by Jean Charest, is that it puts all your eggs in one basket. There’s more to develop than mines in northern Quebec and Quebec has far more resources than just mines. We must develop all our resources to benefit all Quebecers.” (FILE PHOTO)
