Suzanne Chénard and her Independent Learning Path students at Jaanimmarik high school hold up a fresh batch of their handmade black spruce essential oil. The group’s Girls Project, which started off making handmade soaps, is now producing four types of locally-harvested and distilled essential oils to add scents to the products. In addition to black spruce, the group has also distilled oil from Labrador tea, sweet gale and larch. The Girls Project is looking for support to expand production by setting up a distillation facility at the Kuujjuaq school. (PHOTO BY SARAH ROGERS)
