Photo: Spotting the Super Blue Blood Moon

Photographer Denise LeBleu captured this image of the “super blue blood moon” above Cambridge Bay early in the morning of Wednesday, Jan. 31. This moon is special for three reasons: A “super moon” is when a full moon is at its closest point orbiting the Earth; a “blue moon” is the second full moon in a month; and a “blood moon” occurs when the moon passes through the Earth’s shadow, creating a reddish tinge. This was the only image LeBleu managed to get before ice crystals rolled in and her camera started to freeze, in temperatures that dropped to the -50s with the windchill.
